My friend recently asked me which new car she thought I should buy. I answered without hesitation – the Chery Amulet!
The Amulet has a lot of things going for it – stylish good looks, fuel economy, and its excellent build quality, but what I really like is its safety. The Chinese have really pulled out all the stops with this one – one look at the video below and you’ll see why, should an accident befall you, the Chery Amulet is the car to be in.

Hilarious. Could they possibly perform worse than that? Even if they tried?

I’ve got one to trump the Amulet… The original Trabant! Affectionately known as the “Trabi”. The body was made out of cardboard and when you drove in it, you could smell the exhaust fumes coming through into the cabin.

Wincent: well, I suppose they could have a bomb under the driver’s seat with a detonator configured to explode in the event of an impact. I would probably prefer that, actually – I’d rather just be blown up than crushed into pieces like in the video.
Jonny: ha, funny you mentioned the Trabant. I was actually in Germany on a study tour in 1991, soon after reunification. I visited a couple of ex-East German cities and so saw many Trabis; in fact I’m sorry to say I badged one as a souvenir, which I keep to this day.
My impression was actually that the Trabi wasn’t that bad a car – sure it was primitive, but it was pretty well-made and the things just never died. They were lightweight and their body was pretty strong – if you were hitting another Trabant, I reckon you’d have a decent chance of survival. My point is, I’d rather be in a Trabant than that death-trap Amulet!
Check out a Trabant crash test . Looks better to me!

LOL. Looks like you’re right. The Trabi persists! Although, the crash test of the Amulet is smashing into the corner of the static object where as that one with the Trabi is head on, don’t know if that would make a difference, looking again at how the Amulet collapses like paper, probably not. I guess you can’t go past German engineering… Even when they’re using cardboard.
My wife is German. She grew up in East Germany behind the wall until just before she was a teenager when the wall came down. She’s told me stories of when she was a kid and her and her mum used to hoon around in their Trabi, which they had to wait years to get! They were very well loved by their owners and seem to have somewhat taken on a life of their own. But still, I told her I didn’t like the sound of a car where there may be a slim chance of carbon monoxide poisoning just from driving it.
funnily enough, I have a little model Trabi that I brought back from a trip to Germany a few years ago. It’s got a little wind up thing that makes it haul ass when you let it go. It rocks.

Jonny: thanks for the story. Small world, huh.
I actually speak passable German (better than my fucking Japanese god damn %^#(*@* kanji ) and my sister just got back from there, after staying for several years. I’ve been to Deutschland 3 times and bought my first walkman there, which my fucking cunt friend then stole from me. I got the last laugh, though – he went bald by 28.
