Enter the big(ger) league

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

I just placed my first ever paid advertising. Didn’t cost all that much, but was still surprisingly stressful! I feel like I’ve crossed a kind of threshold. Been putting it off for days .. weeks actually, I don’t know why. But then today I watched Steve Job’s 2005 Stanford Commencement Address again and thought, fuck it. Let’s fucking do this. And I clicked “submit”.

Details if and when my venture is successful.

Behind Enemy Lines

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

For reasons currently known only to myself, my task over the last days and weeks has been to infiltrate, imitate and ingratiate myself amongst several top-ranked left-wing websites.

It’s actually been really fun. I usually hate the right-wing websites – at least the comments sections – because I get personally offended that my political leanings are often shared by such fucking morons as those who comment on every right-wing site I know. But with the left-wing sites, it’s kind of a game to see who can shriek the loudest and most ludicrous denunciation of Bush’s thousand-year reign of torment, and so I often find myself laughing out loud as I compose some insane rant against some total straw man (long time visitors will know I’m pretty good at that) – only to watch it be voted up and hailed by my fellow travellers.

Good times and if my ploy is a success, I’ll be spilling beans galore so stay tuned!

Song of the Day

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

Grip!, by Every Little Thing. For maximum effect, I recommend playing it for 2 hours on repeat. This will encourage the onset of a trancelike state of heightened acuity, suitable for the devising of military strategy.

In particular, this is the soundtrack to my methodical planning of the invasion of North Korea, with 10,000 armoured troops and 150,000 aerostatic robots at my disposal.

Listen for the synth solo at 3:20 in! This element of the song accompanies, in my mind, an important stage in the opening phases of the campaign, namely the destruction of PyongYang by aerial bombardment, followed by the initial deployment of the mechanised suits beginning their high-speed assault. All of it in widescreen, immersive HDTV.

I wonder how long it will be before revenue from TV audiences can underwrite the total expense of a limited war? How long before it’s a made-for-TV production, like everything else?

I envisage a media production company which does nothing but plan and stage such events, purely for profit, solely for the excitement and approval of its global audience. Is this not the purest form of capitalist democracy? Who the hell would stop them?

I’d watch it. In fact I’d watch nothing else.

Resignation Day

Friday, August 26th, 2005

Today is the day I will officially tender my resignation for my current position. I’m contractually obliged to give 3 months notice – I had previously interpreted that to mean 12 weeks, meaning I had 2 weeks to go before I had to do it, but I’ve decided to give my employers the benefit of the extra time and so decided to do it today.

I’ve got my speech all ready. Wish me luck!

UPDATE: My boss has gone home “sick”, meaning I have to wait until Monday. Damn!

UPDATE 2: My friend in admin confessed to me that my boss had actually already guessed I was leaving, because I suddenly seemed suspiciously “happy” and was getting along with everyone really well and not arguing anymore … ha!

UPDATE 3: Due to Japanese visa requirements, I am required to demonstrate a large amount of available cash before I can get the visa I want. Money is no problem at my time of departure, but it is now. I have therefore decided to wait until I receive my (sizeable) tax return before resigning, just in case there is a problem or it is held up somehow. It should be this week, anyhow.
