What’s it about?
September 25th, 2005 at 8:27 am
It’s kind of like American Idol, where they all sing and dance, and viewers vote by sms, and one of them wins. The girl on the left, 21 year old Li Yuchun (李宇春), won. The full name is apparently “Mongolian Cow Sour Yoghurt Super Girl Contest” – don’t ask me why.
Oh, and they would ask people to send a “text message of support” – anything to avoid using the word “vote”. The grand finale drew 400 million viewers.
The final was actually on 26th August, so i’m a bit late, haha. There are torrents available, if you’re interested in seeing the best singers in china!
I’ve always had a love for singers, so for me, it’s very entertaining. I’m in love with Li Yuchun!
You can see more pictures here.

Yes, the hair looks really cool. かわいい…
October 17th, 2005 at 12:53 pm
I love Li Yuchun so very much!
October 17th, 2005 at 2:08 pm
BTW,there’s lots of Li Yuchun pics after each of the Article in my blog. I’m big fan of her nice to meet you! Did you see this?
http://eladies.sina.com.cn//z/supergirl/2005/0606/4251.html
many of her Competition videos down this page.
October 17th, 2005 at 7:50 pm
Wow! That’s quite a lot.
Thanks for the link! Yeah, I saw that already. I actually mirrored the entire Hunan TV website just to get every picture possible. So, needless to say, I have a LOT of pictures, hahaha.
Good to meet another fan. Where are you from? And what on earth does “China corn” mean?!
October 17th, 2005 at 10:49 pm
Oh You are a big fan, 2! As fans of Yuchun, we call ourselves “Corns,” a play on a Chinese pun, Yu mi, which sounds similar to “fans of Yu.” We affectionately call Li “Chunchun” (CC) or just “Chun”. I’m a corn of CC from Cheng Du!
October 18th, 2005 at 12:19 am
Ah .. I understand! I had no idea at all…
I’ve never met anyone from Chengdu. That’s in Sichuan province, isn’t it? I don’t know much about it except that it’s famous for giant pandas, and is very old, and is near ChongQing. Although now I looked it up and it’s 11 million people!!!!!!!
So what are you doing there? A student? You should travel to Beijing to see CC’s concerts!
Oh, and your english is very good!
October 18th, 2005 at 12:21 am
Actually, I never visited China. But I hope to visit next year. I only know about 5 words of Mandarin!
I’m looking forward to visiting very much.
October 19th, 2005 at 4:24 am
Hi my name is Dan, I’m a student at the University of Washington. I was trying to find a clip of the show “Super Girl” for a project and I came across this site. Do you guys know where I can find a video of that show online to download it?
October 19th, 2005 at 10:46 am
Dan,
China Corn mentioned this page, which has some videos down the bottom: http://eladies.sina.com.cn//z/supergirl/2005/0606/4251.html
But in general I would recommend searching for bittorrent copies of performances. Are you familiar with bittorrent? if so, just search for 超级女声 and you’ll get plenty of files to choose from.
What’s the project, out of interest?

The 1st concert has been hold in Chengdu on 1st, Oct as 4 of the top 5 Supergirls are from Chengdu, then Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing,….HongKong till the end of year. I didn’t went to any ‘coz CC only sing 3 old songs among the top 10 Supergirls in the concerts, plus I’m not a star chaser and travel to Beijing costs a lot, haha. I guess I’m going to her personal concert one day!
I’ve graduated from SiChuan University, still need a dictionary for my english. Wanna chat? My MSN: taozishen@hotmail.com
October 19th, 2005 at 7:14 pm
Hi Dan, you know the media is unbelieveable either the Time or Washington Post. So keep on walking good luck and dig the truth!
February 3rd, 2006 at 1:38 am
why is everything about CC in chinese??? That s gonna kill me … softly ggg
July 17th, 2006 at 4:58 pm
Toolny: because she’s a Chinese singer in a Chinese singing competition in China?
November 5th, 2007 at 5:35 am
Eu sou muy fan
May 4th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
Li Yuchun seems to have fans from all over Asia, including me.;) Congratulations to Yuchun for winning the first Super Girl competition! Just wish that I could get more information about her, because most of her websites and songs are in Chinese. (I do know a little Chinese, but my Chinese is quite poor.) Just hope that she knew that she have some fans in South Korea too.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:06 pm
I think that shoulder length dark brown hair suis her better. Maybe with some soft curls. What do you think?
June 4th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Hi Won-yeong,
Hm. The feature which first attracted me to her was her boyish appearance and bold fashion, along with her voice. The changes you’re talking about make her look more feminine .. and while that may be nice, it’s not her strength to me …
Have you seen her recent pictures at all? Her current hairstyle is a little more “sophisticated”.
Also, I am surprised you can’t understand Chinese, when I was in Korea I saw a lot of chinese characters!
October 11th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Actually, I am shocked that people are accusing Yu Chun for being a homosexual. As a fan, I think they really should shut up. I got such accusations before, because I look a bit boyish too. As Yu Chun is a singer, her voice is more important than her looks. I was attracted to her voice, not her looks. When I joined her fan club, I never saw her face until about half a year later. But really, the main reason I like her is her unique voice and singing style. BTW, I do understand basic Chinese, because I learnt this language in school as a third language.
October 11th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Hey Choi,
No-one is mentioning her sexuality. Personally, I don’t care about that at all.
But her boyish look and her behaviour style is attractive for a lot of people, particularly girls, because it goes against “traditional” chinese beliefs of female submissiveness. I think a lot of younger Chinese girls look up to her, and greatly admire her, because of that – and they supported her enough to make her win over the “cuter”, more traditional, competitors. I am interested in her as a cultural and political phenomenon first and singer second.
Her singing is important, sure, and she’s a good singer, great even. But the music she chooses to sing doesn’t appeal to me that much. I tend to prefer singer-songwriters.
And hey, what’s wrong with boyish looks?
October 11th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
I am just giving a recommendation, not asking her to totally change her appearance. It’s true that many Koreans can speak and understand Chinese. After all, we are all of the same origin. Perhaps I am just not that intelligent; I can’t pick up a new language as quickly as others can. ;P
이우봄 그것을 유지하십시오!(It means, keep it up, Li Yu Chun!)
October 11th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Sorry, do I sound too rude?
October 11th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Don’t worry. I don’t think she cares to read this page, so say whatever you like. And even if she did want to read it, this blog is blocked in China!
And if you can speak 2 languages, you’re more intelligent than me… I just mentioned it because last time I was in Seoul many place names were written in Chinese characters, which I thought was surprising.
October 11th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Nothing wrong with boyish looks. I am fine with it, Sho. Once again, sorry for that rash comment.
October 11th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
lol. no. say whatever you want, we’re all fans here! : ) 大丈夫よ。
I always want to hear what people have to say about some things I care about it. So, tell everyone your opinion without reservation!
October 12th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Thanks, Sho. I didn’t know that you are a Japanese. How I wish I could visit Japan one day. By the way, did you ever meet Yu Chun personally before? Even if she can’t read your blog, I am sure she would be proud to have such a loyal fan like you! Also, I was surprised that you are able to watch the Super Girl competition in Japan. I would like to ask you, do you know the reason why Yu Chun’s fans address themselves as ‘corns’?
October 12th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Hi Terri,
Actually, I am not Japanese. But, I do speak some Japanese, and live in Japan and Australia. You should definitely visit Japan, maybe you would love it. Right now, I am in Sydney, Australia.
I could only watch the Super Girl competition in Japan because I downloaded it.
Regarding your question about Corns, let me quote my friend:
I hope that answers your question!
And unfortunately, I could not meet her in person – though I would surely like to. However, don’t be misled – I am not a true fan of Yu Chun. I don’t like much Chinese music. I like her and admire her and follow her career with some interest, but I wouldn’t call myself a “fan” like you. I posted this just to educate other westerners who don’t know about her, or the sociopolitical phenomenon her victory represented.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Hi, Sho. Although I am a fan, I just follow her music and news. I didn’t went to her concerts and other fan meetings, etc. My fan club is just a small circle of friends. By the way, since you asked about my nationality, yes, I am half-Korean. my father is Korean and my mother is Taiwanese. I came to Singapore as a transfer student, and have been studying here for five years. I can’t be on holiday for such a long time! Thanks for that explaination on whythe fans are being named corns. My blog isn’t quite complete yet, so do check it out often.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Hm, actually I removed that question about your nationality, since it’s not important. It seems you have cool friends, no-one here knows anything about my favourite singers.
October 15th, 2008 at 12:40 am
Let’s have some more recent photos, since this post gets continuing interest from fans.
Please see http://fukamachi.org/wp/2008/10/15/li-yuchun-recent-photos/
October 16th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Dear Li Yuchun fans,
Some disturbing evidence regarding Chinese cloning and genetic experiments has been discovered that may lead to the termination of Li Yuchun.
Please view these incredible photo comparisons and join the fight against these atrocities.
Sincerely,
ICM

Hi, I am the person who created Terri Choi. I am sorry for causing all the trouble. Please remove all my comments I left in your blog. Thank you.
November 29th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Hello Teresa – or Terri, or Phriscellia, or whatever you are calling yourself today. I will not remove anything without a good reason. You haven’t given one. Why did you change your mind?
Anyway, you didn’t cause any trouble at all. I, and several of my friends, really appreciated your performance, and are looking forward to your next one.
I see you deleted both other blogs. Why? Of course, I kept full copies but the originals would have been better!
Yours to create, yours to destroy, but why, after all that effort?
What you created was excellent. It was really effective, it taught me a lot. If you really don’t want to be associated any more, I might recreate them.
PS I know you chose “Altansetseg” from the wikipedia page on Mongolian names, although you then misspelt it. Try harder
November 29th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Teresa: Talking more about your creative writing and interesting performance art elsewhere.
What you did was very well done. I had heard of such performances before, but this was the first time I could see one as it happened. It’s a new phenomenon which exists only on the internet. I wish you hadn’t deleted the original blogs, as I thought many people would be interested to see your works. Luckily though, as I said, I kept full records, despite your attempts to stop me : )
Now, I am considering writing more about it. I think many people would be interested. What do you think? Maybe you would be willing to answer some questions about it, kind of like a profile? I have so many questions!
The fictional character’s profile
The “oath of death” from the fictional Death Host blog, which was central to the performance
Honestly, I admired your writing and creative imagination. That week was really interesting for me. A kind of audience-participation theatre like I hadn’t seen before. I know several people who are interested in this kind of thing, you know. We all appreciated your efforts, and as you saw, several tried to take part (did you see the fan website?), although obviously you didn’t really approve of our attempts : )
We also made several suggestions for your next performance, especially in timing. Actually, we created a tool to help you post comments and blog stories according to a pre-written script, reducing your effort. See how much reaction there was to your play? I assume you are a writer already. If more people knew about what you did, you might become popular.
Please let me know about your next performance.
Sho
PS who’s the girl in the picture, anyway? I grew quite fond of her after a while!
November 30th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Also, who is Phriscellia? Your new character?
You’ve got a larger audience this time.
November 30th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Terri: you’re aging quickly! Slow down!!
December 1st, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Changed a little?
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
I want to clarify this: I am not Teresa Altansetseg. She is the author, I am just an audience who happens to be chosen to finish her story. She wanted me to piece the story back together after she deleted it. By the way, that girl in the picture is Teresa. She is Mongolian. She still looks the same now, except that her hair is longer and darker. So, you are Teresa’s friend??
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Hey! If you like Teresa, why don’t you just say so? If age is a factor, then I hope you don’t mind that Teresa is older than you. Also, you helped me solve the mystery and missing part of the plot. Thank you very much!!
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
You misunderstand the nature of my interest, but you’re welcome anyway.
December 4th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Chào! I am Phriscellia. The misspelling in her name is delibrate. She did it purposely. I don’t think the girl you met at Changi airport is Teresa, because she is not in Singapore now. There must be some mistake in the age. I don’t know who changed it to thirty. Teresa is only twenty four years old. There I something I don’t understand very well. Who is Li Yuchun, and why does Teresa like this person so much?
December 4th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Xin chào.
Why don’t you ask her why she likes Li Yuchun? I don’t know.
Thanks for correcting her age!
December 5th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Anh có thể nói tiếng Việt? Rất tốt! Việt Nam của tôi tên là Thúy Hạnh. Tôi không là ngươi Việt. Tôi là ngươi Hàn Quốc. Rất cảm ơn.
December 5th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Tôi biết một chút tiếng Nhật và tiếng Trung Quốc. Anh từ đâu đến?
December 5th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Why are you speaking in vietnamese? I am not vietnamese and neither is anyone else here.
Please use English if you want anyone to understand you.
December 5th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
So, Singapore Girl, why don’t we talk about other girls we like.
That’s something we have in common, isn’t it?
December 8th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Ok, my turn to ask: Who’s the Singapore Girl you are talking to?
December 8th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
A few days ago, I was mistaken to be a Singapore Girl. She was a former student in my school. The students say that I look like her. What a coincidence!
December 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I have just realised that many people think “Singapore Girl” means a flight attendant on Singapore Airlines. Sorry! I didn’t think about it, and didn’t mean that. I just meant “Unknown Girl from Singapore” or, more bluntly, “you, human with the singnet IP address”.
Weird, I have caught SIA a lot, but didn’t remember that …
I’ve never seen a particularly good-looking FA on SIA anyway! I don’t know why they have a reputation for being so beautiful. Maybe tastes are different there.
Always lots of coincidences when you’re around, Phriscellia!
December 15th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Really? I didn’t know about that! If you call me “human with singnet address”, then you are referring to all my flatmates too. We all share the same connection.
December 15th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Actually, everyone in Singapore shares the same IP addresses, since they all have to go through the same proxy servers. Internet access is closely controlled in the Lion City.
I think there’s two main ranges – one is 220.255/16, but I can’t remember the other one. 124/8 or something. You appear consistently under the first subnet.
It’s kind of a nightmare for anyone trying to find someone in Singapore using IP addresses, but I’m sure singnet keeps a close eye on who accesses what.
December 18th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Just heard Li Yuchun’s song “Happy Winter” on the radio. Her voice is quite low.
December 20th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Why is the topic for this post changing?
December 20th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
What do you mean? The subjects people discuss?
Well, I don’t know, people talk about what they want. I don’t mind.
December 20th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Now I’m assembling Christmas Playlist 2008. 楽しみに!
December 21st, 2008 at 1:35 pm
No, the topic in this post changed from Li Yuchun to visitng Sichuan, to Super Girl competition, to the Chinese language, to Terri Choi, then I came in and complain about you mistakening me for Teresa… (a lot more topics, if I mention it all, it would make a long list.) It’s fine to me, but other visitors of the blog might get confused.
December 21st, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Oh, that’s OK. Who cares about visitors?
This is my blog, and it’s my conversations about my interests with my friends. If visitors like it, they can join in. If they don’t, they can go somewhere else! There are millions of other blogs.
Visitors are welcome of course, but attracting them is not really the purpose of this blog.
Hm, actually, speaking about visitors, I am curious as to how many readers a day your blog gets on MSN Live Spaces. You seem to get a lot of comments there, so I assume a lot of people read it?
December 27th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
According to my blog’s statistics, about ten people a day. Recently, I’ve been receiving a lot of views from http://alphainventions.com/. But usually, it’s the same few people who are writing comments on the articles.
December 27th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Ah, thanks for that information, that’s interesting.
This one gets about 400 a day usually, but sometimes goes up to a few thousand if there’s something popular. That is really low, but who cares, hehe.
Like yours, it’s always the same people leaving comments, too …
December 28th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Someone must have recommended my blog to that website, or else the statistics wouldn’t have shot up.
Did anyone recommend your blog to that website?
December 28th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
I don’t think so. The visitors do not come from that website. I have never heard of it, I doubt they have thousands of visitors a day.
New visitors are usually from search engines, or mention on Reddit or somewhere.
December 29th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
But this website link is from the blog statistics. I guess most of them saw it from there.
December 29th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
You are right. There’s someone who saw my blog from the google search engine result for “vietnam soccer victory”.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Ok, back to the topic. Why does the girl in the picture above always looks so pitiful?? I just think so, I don’t know why.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

What you did was very well done. I had heard of such performances before, but this was the first time I could see one as it happened. It’s a new phenomenon which exists only on the internet. [Huh? But it's just a script, which has been edited quite a lot! lol...]I wish you hadn’t deleted the original blogs, as I thought many people would be interested to see your works. Luckily though, as I said, I kept full records, despite your attempts to stop me : ) [You did?? Show me!!]
Now, I am considering writing more about it. I think many people would be interested. [Ha! Like who?] What do you think? Maybe you would be willing to answer some questions about it, kind of like a profile? I have so many questions!
[then just ask! Lol...]
Honestly, I admired your writing and creative imagination. [It's my pleasure!] That week was really interesting for me. A kind of audience-participation theatre like I hadn’t seen before. [Hmm, thanks for your help!] See how much reaction there was to your play? I assume you are a writer already. If more people knew about what you did, you might become popular.
[Huh, if only... oh, well. But I will never get to surpass other fiction writers, anyway. You don't find the script too dramatic??]
Please let me know about your next performance.
[I am not sure... It might go crazier and crazier if I go on!]
Sho [my first fan! ^_^]
PS who’s the girl in the picture, anyway? I grew quite fond of her after a while!
[ I got that from somewhere, I think she's a Chinese model or something... But anyway, without that cheeky wink, she would look rather robotic, as you like it. She could have been an animation character, you know...]
but then again, I can never be sure, but I appreciate your help.
